There's no such thing as a legacy system... just a system. If it has no tests, you can characterise it as you go along. If it is a mess, you can make it better as you go along. You don't have to burn a library down to write a new book.

just heard in a presentation: "we decided to use microservices to reduce technical complexity" ... i thought people would have realized in 2020 that microservices *increase* (operational) complexity by orders of magnitude. well, will probably take some more time to sink in ...

...Incredibly, those (Brigham Young) researchers were looking for the "ideal ratio" of what might be called verbal doggie biscuits to verbal spankings. Perhaps I can help: the ideal ratio is zero to zero.

So, snake oil, when bought at the right price and for the right purpose, is a justifiable spend. It's only when you try to apply a chest rub to your broken leg, expecting a good outcome, that you become a true fool.

For example, one style of snake oil, though not made from snakes, contained camphor. You educated modern folks still buy this with your hard-earned enlightened money to cure your ills today, it's called Vicks VapoRub.

It's not so much the snake oil salesmen; it's the shills who shout approval from the crowd.

"Monoliths are the future because the problem people are trying to solve with microservices doesn’t really line up with reality", I aspire to such savage language as that which flows from . PREACH BROTHER! 😂❤️✊

Choosing a TDD training provider is a minefield. 3 signs to watch out for: 1. Do they say who runs the course? 2. Do they say who wrote the course? 3. How many times have they run it? As for ours, it's... 1. 2. 3. > 100

Sadly a lot of the ‘thought leader’ comments on microservices vs. monoliths seem pretty dumb. Both microservices and monoliths are architectural styles. You obey some constraints and in return you obtain some properties. The properties let you reason about the best fit for you

Whether you look at JSON, YAML, or XML should be an individual editor preference, like your colour scheme.

Some of these tricks work, and some only work with certain inputs. You could just trust the author... it's Jim Frickin Al-Khalili after all... but empirical skepticism makes us all smarter, because it gives us a simple mechanism to validate information.

There are two kinds of reactions to this information: total belief and total disbelief. Both reactions are wrong. The correct reaction is to reproduce the experiment and then look for examples that don't work...
