Yep. I've had words with them. They didn't want to change the award to include non-binary folks. But the person who ran it recently left, so maybe there's room for change now.

That's awful that they're using "female" in their language terms!

I hear you. It's too late to change anything for this year, but it's definitely on my list to discuss for next year. (I just took over PM duties two weeks ago.)

It's never too late to change transphobic language.

If it wasn't in the legal terms and conditions, I would agree with you.

I would be very interested in hearing how we should reword any sections that you consider to be transphobic. Basically, send me PR. :D

I think this means you need to have a serious talk with your legal team about not using transphobic terms. You're treating this gibly as a minor wording fix. We're treating this as a red flag of possible toxic culture.

A fix would be: "nominations are open for women (both cis and trans)". Drop the "identify as" term. Trans women don't "identify" as women, they are women. "Female" is often used by transphobic people as short hand for cis women (assigned female at birth) to exclude trans women.

Thank you,
@_sagesharp_! Really appreciate your advice here! Fwiw, I think the original intention for "identify" was to be inclusive and it came from the language the Ada Initiative and Double Union used: "identify as women in a way that’s significant to them".1 reply 0 retweets 0 likes
Right, but you can't identify as a female. You can identify as a woman. Sounds like someone got their wires crossed.
