I'd like to see tech conferences require sponsors to donate 5% of the sponsorship costs to charity. How much money we could put into some of these organizations? Homeless veterans. Battered women. Hungry children.

Eating delicious, expensive meals when we walk by dozens of folks who need help on the way is weighing on me. What if speaker dinners were serving at food banks?

We get paid excessive salaries. We're given free clothing. We're fed great food. And drink limitless alcohol. And our tech can help these problems. Absolutely. So can our cash. Giving money to the folks who do this work everyday.

I work for non-profits and smaller community events as a self-employed contractor. I might be making as much as I did when working for a company, but 39% self-employment tax and paying my own medical cuts into my final paycheck. A week at a conference is a week of no paying work.
