I’ve been reporting on the abusive culture at Linux over the last couple of months -- on Sunday, Linus Torvalds said he was taking a break to get help. My article , w/ , , , , .

Oh my goodness! One of the former interns made me this polymer clay figure of the logo because I made them feel so welcome. I almost cried when I saw it. My heart is full of joy! 😍

This is a really good thread quite separate from the greater context of the Linus thing

It's also worth considering many of these men *had* a second chance--and used it to abuse more people. Many accusations aren't one offs--they're part of a pattern. How many chances do they get? How many people are expected to give up *any* chance on the altar of ~brilliant men~?

There's a lot of discussion about what it would take for powerful men who have abused people to get the second chance that *obviously* they're entitled to, and I think that my answer is that they can have a second chance after all the people they hurt get one.

Where's the second chance for the people who were hounded out of careers, out of hobbies, out of computer classes and rpgs and theatre groups because they dared to show up and have breasts, or because they broke up with someone, or because they weren't a straight white dude?

I've seen people talking about how Louis C.K., Weinstein, Spacey, Hardwick, etc, etc, fucking etc, deserve a second chance. And you know, ok! People deserve second chances. So what I want to know is this: when do their victims get second chances?

I know there is resistance to this kind of tweet but I'm going to take a chance; could I get 270 retweets of the link to my award winning book. Your support means the world to me:

Uh. Muting suggest_recycled_tweet_inline and suggest_activity_tweet actually has fixed my timeline. It's all chronological and there are barely any "x and y liked" tweets.

Here is what I'm betting. They were asked to vouch for him not knowing the reason why. Seemed like a simple ask. Kavanaugh was being manipulative even to these 65 women. That should really tell you something about someone who wants to be a lifetime judge.

Thinking a lot about Lundy Bancroft's "Why Does He Do That? Inside the Minds of Angry and Controlling Men" today, especially: "If we want abusers to change, we will have to require them to give up the luxury of exploitation."
