A4. Industry needs to embed PPI across the whole organisation, and make it a core part of how research is done. This means investing in teams and resources to support involvement, including training. and offer training for industry.

A4. PPI needs to be planned and carried out in line with best practices and principles. PFMD Patient Engagement Quality Guidance sets out key principles and is a tool that can be used to plan and assess PPI activities

Maintaining independence is important. How might payment to patient orgs affect this? Sometimes payment can be viewed as negative, which is a challenge for patient orgs

A3. Talk to your communities about what they think about working with industry, and work with them to address any concerns and to develop your policy position and your principles for partnership. Transparency is key.

For me, and many others I am sure, the numbers and figures aren't the things that show the most meaningful impact. But I do think that we need to acknowledge that this is the language industry work with and numbers help promote change in senior leadership.

A2. Seeing evidence that PPI will have a financial benefit - and this evidence is now becoming available. Example here shows potential for 500-fold increase on investment, which can accelerate product launch by 2 years: .

A2. I think the best way for industry to be persuaded is to try it out for themselves and see what they have been missing out on. Once people work with people affected by health conditions and experience first-hand their valuable insights, they start to get it.

A1. Lack of incentive from regulators. Industry look to regulators for guidance, and regulators have been slow to adopt PPI and issue guidance on how to do meaningful patient involvement.

A1. There has been an assumption that ‘patient-centricity’ equates to meaningful patient and public involvement - not the case. It’s about more than “designing a service or solution around the patient” - it’s about working WITH people - two-way dialogue, co-creation.
