The most promising mitigation in the new iPhones already bypassed. It took many many man-years for @Arm to get PAC into iPhones. It took a week for @qwertyoruiopz to bypass. Brilliant.https://twitter.com/qwertyoruiopz/status/1041748874023583745 …

We can estimate that between @Apple and @Arm the entire HW/SW cycle to implement PAC took 100-1000+ man years (including design, implementation, QA, etc) and one week to bypass. #hackersgonnahack

Not a fair comparison. Pointer Authentication has well documented security properties. This is not a break of the primitive but a demonstration of worst case conditions (arbitrary r/w exploit primitives and JIT). See also:https://twitter.com/qwertyoruiopz/status/1041824583219855372?s=09 …

it's a bit more interesting than just a pointer replacement attack, but you're correct: it's an attack on CFI, not PAC itself. PAC seems pretty solid.

Maybe I misunderstood your tweet, but every trick is fair to bypass mitigations. Hackers do not play by the rules by definition.

      Replying to @ihackbanme @acar_can and

If you force attackers to find more powerful vulnerabilities (which are rarer) than that is a win and exactly what a mitigation is designed to achieve.

Not every vulnerability can be turned into full process memory r/w and not all targets have a JIT (in fact only Safari has one)
