We mean that there are projects under licenses that follow the spirit of the OSD but are not OSS / don't have their licenses OSI approved. For instance, open data projects under @Linux Foundation's CDLA.

Probably worth clarifying this further (as I know you don't mean to muddy the definition of open source).

If we're referring to projects under the LF - then certainly this program really isn't for them - is it?. Those projects have somewhat risen to a level of having visibility.

From my viewpoint, 501(c)(3) type organizations are more of the intended recipient of these credits, along with perhaps independent maintainers that could use assistance with infrastructure. That said, there are some 501(c)(6)s like Ruby Together that aren't like Linux Foundation

So @awscloud should be able to work with @opencollect to solve that issue and open this up to a larger audience. Starting a foundation is a LOT of work and if you can do it, these credits probably are a nice-to-have vs must-have.

(which issue?) No question establishing a new entity is a TON of work!

The "issue" (if that's even in the right term) was the stated need for @awscloud to provide credits to an OSS project it would preferably have a foundation and the follow-up that non-OSI projects are under LF. That's what I was responding to.

Oh, no no. Frankly I think it's just not a good summary (preferably foundations, etc.). Linux Foundation, with its associated collaborative projects and directed funds, is generally well funded through membership fees, events, etc. I advocate for areas that have more acute needs.

          Jacob Redding Retweeted Danese Cooper

Good to hear, but that's not what @arungupta had on the slide so messaging might be getting confused. I note that the 501cX/foundation requirement is not listed on the signup page, so just little messaging blips.https://twitter.com/DivaDanese/status/1183742368568266755?s=19 …

@arungupta announces a program to give @awscloud credits to projects meeting 3 criteria: 1) open source 2) preferably backed by a non-profit foundation 3) and preferably under an OSI-approved open source license. That word “preferably” is potentially troubling @AllThingsOpen

I didn't get to see the slides... I'm sure we can fix the confusion. My intuition is that the overall program is one that's very aligned with the work of charities like @OpenSourceOrg, @TheASF, @ThePSF, and others, but there is no hard requirement on having such an entity.
