Are there examples of large open source projects with non-open governance that serve their community selflessly and that wouldn’t be serving it better if they were more open?

I can think of plenty of non openly governed projects with are very much self-serving. But I can’t really think of an example where such stewardship is concretely better.

The Linux Foundation only administers the Linux trademark... Linus is the final decision maker for the kernel as a software package. There are pros and cons to this approach, in my view...
