Cncf is fine, we're just going another way. I reject the idea that the only way to open source is a given foundation. This is literally what open source was for in the first place, to give a fertile neutral ground for people to work together.https://twitter.com/brendandburns/status/1179176440647913472 …

I'm pretty disappointed to see Knative forgo open governance. https://groups.google.com/forum/#!topic/knative-dev/YmL2vgMC4rc … The growth and user focus of Kubernetes, Helm and many others show that CNCF is a great home for open communities. OSS is better if we work together in neutral spaces

Note I didn't say 'open source' I said 'open governance' There's a big difference.

Also there's a big difference between applications/libraries and infrastructure. Governance matters way more for infrastructure projects because it's a much tighter dependency Libraries are easy (ish) to fork. Infrastructure, not so much.

As someone with much much less expertise, experience, and stake — what I’d find interesting is why open governance is a good fit for k8s but not knative or Istio. What is the tradeoff space?

Just because a software package is not housed in a trade association/charitable foundation that has guidelines about governance expectations (as Linux Foundation and The Apache Foundation both do), it does not mean that the information flow and decision making isn't open...

In other words, I believe that you can build dynamic and welcoming communities of individuals and companies in a foundation of earned trust.

And too often I have seen calls for "open governance" because there is a fundamental lack of trust. (Not saying that is the case here. I'm only talking generalities).
