Other foundations like @CloudNativeFdn and @OpenStack invest a huge amount of time in this. Is it worth it? I think paying attention to the *outcomes* is most important.

Fwiw, yes. @mjasay publishes a report about top OSS contributors every quarter, and, having been at two companies that care about OSS a lot, that report gets traction. It also helps to call out freeriders :)

@filmaj also has one running. I don't think it's about vanity metrics, however imperfect they may be. I think it's impossible to deliver "quality" without significant "quantity", too

I'm crunching numbers for final months of 2018 as we speak. Hope to have some data for Matt next week 😀

Maybe @_msw_ and @ciphr will give you the github handles because, otherwise, I suspect AWS will be undercounted.

Everyone is undercounted. There is no way around it as there are good reasons that developers prefer not to advertise their employer affiliation. I don't think any one company gets underrepresented (percentage wise) than another

There are companies that are *much* more systematic about making sure affiliations are always set, data files are updated, etc. But who can show that open source actually is better off for all this tallying?

Well, I would be happy to show you (in a private chat) how much better my company is doing bc we tally. We tally to push ourselves to do more. I think that's very healthy and, because we do more, open source is richer for it.

And, as I suggested earlier, I've been at Amazon, Google and, now, Microsoft, and I can assure you that at all places the reports on who is contributing what are passed around A LOT and they drive behavior.

Yes, Amazon is a big company. I suggest that folks at AWS might be thinking about open source differently from how Amazon Local did in 2013.

Even in 2013 Amazon Web Services joined the Linux foundation to be a founding member of the new Xen collaborative project because we identified it as an investment need in the sustainability of Xen.
