Also interesting that the NYT has brought back the dreaded spedometer, albeit in a less wiggly rendering

It's the 1st election of the season and already we are getting to see lots of differing qualities of uncertainty visualizations!! It's amazing how much more certain 538 (right) seems about their predictions than NYT (left)

I honestly can't tell if this is a real academic paper or an elaborate troll but either way, it's totally brilliant. "Randomly generated pseudo-profound bullshit titles increased the perceived profoundness of computer-generated abstract art" -

The 's! () are also in this vein, although i believe it's not an intentionally acquired award (in contrast to the other tracks in this thread) so it's somewhat different

Stupid hackathon () has similar whimsical aims although lensed through a hackathon format rather than an academic conference

This is some of the best news I’ve received in a while

(the festival of bad adhoc hypotheses) also bares a close resemblance to the above academic events, although taken to a far greater extreme

The one-off nature+locality of these events has a vibe a little bit like local events at rodeos (such as the bizzare wild-cow milking at the livermore rodeo )

(also forgive me if i'm mischaracterizing gong show :8 i'm unsure of what actually goes on there)

i don't even know what to call these alternative tracks? symmetry magazine wrote an article about quirky arxiv papers (), which suggests there must be more humorous/light intentioned scholarship like this out there

There are a number of tracks within academic conferences that are meant to bring a sense of levity, fun, or satire to proceedings that might be dry other wise. altchi (CHI) sigbovik gong show (CIDR) Functional Pearls (ICFP) are there others? do these exist outside of CS?

The reason Google’s new search design can claim to “boldy” label ads while making them difficult to distinguish has to do with something called pre-attentiveness.

Griffiths Electrodynamics says “Feynman was fond of saying you should never begin a calculation before you know the answer” Does anyone know this quote's origin? I haven't been able to find a primary source. I use it as a metaphor alot and i'd hate for it to be a misattribution

I'm lecturing a data vis course this quarter (for the first time!) and I'm quickly learning that it's the small joys that make it worth while. For instance, yesterday I lectured about "On Bullshit" and got to unleash a unbridled torrent of curses at my students for a half hour

Pet peeve: repos that don't include a link to the page that they construct. While it is easy to copy the name into the url bar, it seems like just good manners to put a link to the site in the field designed to hold that link
