Folks, I have very exciting, slightly belated news to share: I'm joining the psychology faculty as an assistant professor! My lab opens Jan 2020, and I'm recruiting at all the levels (full-time RA/lab manager, PhD student, post docs). Please RT!

Job candidates are already juggling a lot. Pumping unavoidably adds stress: an unforgiving schedule and equipment to remember, cart around, and clean. So help these folks out, and handle the hotel fridge detail for them. I promise they will be grateful. (4/4)

Lots of rooms (the basic ones you book for junior candidates) don’t have fridges by default, and getting one is time consuming and often requires a fee or room upgrade. Worst case scenario will involve candidate heading to the lobby to use the employee fridge at all hours. (3/4)

I’m going to assume you’ve already sorted out private space to pump and fridge access in your department. But pumping is a round the clock thing when away from your baby, and they’ll need a place to put milk in the hotel. (2/4)

PSA for search committees arranging campus visits: If any of your candidates have requested time to pump for a nursing infant, do them a favor — make sure there’s a mini fridge in their hotel room! (1/4)

Related: If you’re on the job market this year, keep your head up. It’s a hard process, but persistence is a powerful tool. And remember that the outcome does not determine your worth, as a scientist or a person.

This is a lovely set of experiments that makes a point I find quite useful: we often think of kinds (of things and of people) as having rich, predictive causal structure without assuming that structure comes from an internal essence. i.e. it's not all psychological essentialism

I very much enjoyed both writing a commentary on Heyes's cognitive gadgets hypothesis, and reading others' comments & her reply. Anyone interested in how humans acquire culture should check it out:
