I’ve never been promoted, in 20+ years of working in software. Hadn’t fully realized it until I saw this thread & thought through all the ‘transitions’ I’ve been through. I don't want to take away from this message at all, but the only promotion I've had in my 17 years was a relunctant one, to correct a demotion I took when joining a company. Really annoying.

I don’t think it takes away from the gender disparity angle. I’ve gotten one significant raise in 20 years and both Amy’s were well under market. But as a white male, it’s easier to find employment, negotiate that raise, and be taken seriously. Similar narrative; more privilege.
