Spent the last few hours trying to build examples of convex sets (algebras of the finite support probability monad) that are, to use the technical term, haunted

Our Dagstuhl workshop proposal on Everything Is Secretly Lenses If You Squint A Bit was sadly not accepted. For sure we'll hold it anyway, somewhere at some time, but the wine cellar won't be as good

(Not because I'm in a von Neumann-centred Cult of Genius, merely because he had the right combination of interests and knowledge earlier than nearly anyone else. In principle Zermelo had a chance too, but a lot was discovered about both logic and games between 1913 and 1945)

I'm sure there's a parallel universe where von Neumann discovered the basic ideas of game semantics

(This reminds me what Bob wrote on facebook yesterday morning. Loosely paraphrasing from memory: I lead the biggest research group in the number 1-ranked cs department in world, brought in millions in funding, provided countless jobs to young researchers, and now I'm a foreigner)

In all seriousness though, research done in the Oxford Quantum Group is now being used on actual hardware, but they were getting quite well funded for over a decade before that, building up some serious (mostly categorical) theory. Back then there were no quantum machines!

The categorical approach is very useful. If you don't have any significant results yet, you can just nod wisely and reply that the tide is still coming in, you have to be patient (Sadly, I think funding agencies are fairly immune to this trick)

If this can be found anywhere, surely it's in information geometry. I'll ask my boss when I see him

Bayesian updating composes like the reverse-mode chain rule Has anybody written down the topology? Stochastic processes in the base, observations in the fibres, comorphisms of bundles for Bayes' law (This is "Bayes is lenses" in more familiar but slightly overkill language)

Interesting MO question: among hard mathematical results, which can we trust and how can we know? Question inspired by a talk by Kevin Buzzard (), with slides online:

It hurts my brain just thinking about what it will take to work through all the details

It sounds utterly ridiculous to say, but by now I think the *right* level of generality to start for a "rising sea" approach to cybernetics (for at least parts of mathematical economics and machine learning) is the 2-category [actegories, Tambara modules, natural transformations]

St John's College, Oxford () deactivated my room key and are escorting me to and from my room, where I live, in college. Just because I'm helping students call them out for the money they invest in fossil fuels.

I can hold a conversation in German, order in a restaurant in French, and say please and thank you in Dutch and Lithuanian. But I'm very firmly monolingual

"The EU encourages all its citizens to be multilingual; specifically, it encourages them to be able to speak two languages in addition to their native language." Many from the UK lamenting their loss of EU citizenship would prefer to ignore that part

At this stage it's necessary to keep fighting brexit as vigorously as ever. But I expect everyone will give up, and just go back to driving their backwards cars in mph, plugging in their weird plugs and quitting French in school
