It is hard to do the right thing - and even to keep sight of what the right thing is — when your system, group, and career incentives push you towards doing the wrong thing. Mitt Romney - and Justin Amash - deserve a lot of respect for doing the right thing when it was hard.

The US is in denial over how many people are living in poverty. Our poverty line assumes: $0 healthcare costs $0 childcare costs $0 rent increases No geographic diff Even w that lie, 40 million people live in *recognized* poverty. & we have no idea how many are actually poor.

Doug Jones of Alabama has the toughest Senate fight of any incumbent this year, and he’s voting to convict despite there not being close to enough votes for conviction. This is what character looks like. This is a U.S. Senator doing their job with integrity.

“A master showman at his best” *Whew* at the media normalizing this man. Who literally honored a racist at that same event. The news media is just a shameful mess around how they frame the craziness of this administration.

The complete erasure of Elizabeth Warren from the post-Iowa coverage is...strange.

There aren't a lot of moments of pure patriotism and self-sacrifice in American life anymore, of bravery in the face of what will be a remainder of a life filled with threats and disparagement. Let us honor one when we see it. Bravo and thank you, .

One year ago today, I filed my first piece as a full-time freelancer. As I grew accustomed to the hustle, I decided to set an absurd goal for myself: 100 pieces in my first year. Now, including Patreon essays and filed drafts, my final tally is 103. Here are a few favorites:

This speech by McConnell is not only a stream of lies, but he *knows* it they are lies. Nauseating.

Joni Ernst sided with Trump over America today. She broke her Oath of Office and is unworthy of the power that office bestows. I wholly intend to defeat her in November and take my place in the Senate come January of 2021. I'll do what I can to bring dignity back to the office.

The Democratic-led House has passed 400 bills and the vast majority of them have been blocked by Mitch McConnell, who has refused to consider them for debate and a vote. Imagine being David Brooks and getting paid by NYT to be this bad at your job.

Can’t share details, but one time David Brooks wrote a column that was so bad—so wildly off-base, wrong about basic political history and tax policy—that I and others had to pull an all-nighter working on a line-by-line rebuttal. We had a 3am conference call, about its wrongness.

Romney not just voting to convict, he’s ripping Trump anew: “An appalling abuse of public trust” “A flagrant assault” on our elections “Perhaps the most abusive and destructive violation of ones oath of office that I can imagine."

Donald Trump awarded the Medal of Freedom last night to a propagandist. A man who has peddled bigotry, misogyny, racism, and hate for decades. It is utterly disgraceful.

Just accidentally stumbled on a book using Jewish texts called The 5 Skinny Habits: How Ancient Wisdom Can Help You Lose Weight and now I want to smash things. Neither God nor Judaism thinks your value derives from fitting toxic late capitalist standards of beauty. Just no.
