Originally it did, but it was changed to the empty string which is falsy so you can do if (video.canPlayType(t)) { ... }

One of my apps depends strongly on it... having a result other than an empty string means the environment supports the codec passed in the function, with exceptions on some edge cases (i.e. h265, no reliable results on some devices). Not sure how we ended up with such an api.

video/mp4 isn't enough detail to know whether the codec is supported. Okay, it's an MPEG-4 container, but what video codec is within it? (There's multiple! And multiple profiles of each! You might just support the baseline profile of H.264 & nothing else.)
