“Peter Handke lives, like Jessica Stern, in a reality he has created for himself.” on the denialist rewriting of the Bosnian genocide, furthered by clickbait publishers and accomplices. We will not forget.

Sometimes it’s the little things that get you through the day. Like how every time I see it I insist on reading "Balkanize" as "Balkan eyes," in a slow, sensuous voice. Try it.

In 1917, Pero Slijepčević, then a student at Geneva, traveled to the US to collect aid for the Serb cause in WWI (his pamphlet "Serbs in America" was "published with the help of Croats in South America":) I like the way he rewrote the US map, with Кентуки, Мићиган &

My grandmother was an influencer in former Slavoslackia and had like 5 million subscribers to her meme-based stream of consciousness and when The Communists came they took it all away and nationalized her Insta into the Lenin Hall of Fame. Memoir forthcoming.

After Handke, its hard to take Stern's book on Karadzic, which & others have written about with clarity. Adis Maksic & I wrote an article on Karadzic's emergence as a politician in Bosnia in the summer of 1990.

For years before 9/11, the FBI ran an operation called "Vulgar Betrayal"—who says repressive bigots don't like wordplay?—to surveil Chicago's Muslim residents and then apparently spun off more surveillance projects. Findings by &

If you missed this yesterday, this is a necessary reading by dissecting Jessica Stern's "My War Criminal" (the book title is apt in a pitiful, daft way)

It is a truth universally acknowledged that an immigrant in possession of life in America is in want of sufficient patriotism. Every criticism of America must be disproportionately offset by praise of its greatness—otherwise witness the flood of idiotic abuse aimed at this tweet

The CHM exhibit’s spotlight on Bosnian-American Muslims is also noteworthy. From Bosnian immigrants in the 1890s (check out the the Džemijetul Hajrije music section) to the refugees & Islamophobia of the 1990s, the exhibit connects their journeys to broader histories & contexts.

It’s an eclectic exhibit, touching on a lot and discussing anti-Muslim bigotry in the present, but it skates over the much longer and more complex histories of racism around and within American Muslim communities. I expected much more than brief mention of Ahmadiyya, NOI, etc.

Ultra-nationalists in Serbia, incl war criminal Seselj’s Radicals, demand the govt print volumes of Peter Handke’s collected works. While plays dumb, the extremists speak clearly: we love him for his genocide denial & Milosevic apologetics.

I love this thoughtful thread about individual family Holocaust stories, removed in time, and scattered across space, not being subsumable into easily packaged “lessons” material for popular consumption.
