Most disturbing datapoint I've seen in awhile: two-thirds of Southern Republicans now say the South should break away from the Union, up from 50 percent in January. https://thewhyaxis.substack.com/p/two-thirds-of-southern-republicans …pic.twitter.com/OWx23L9pLc

Data comes from @BrightLineWatch's latest and there's a ton of other good stuff in there, as usual http://brightlinewatch.org/still-miles-apart-americans-and-the-state-of-u-s-democracy-half-a-year-into-the-biden-presidency/ …

They caution that most of the people favoring secession are probably doing so for partisan signaling reasons, eg "I'm a proud Southerner and I hate Joe Biden!", and would likely balk at the idea if it were truly on the table in a concrete sense

Still, part of the reason support for secession is so high in the GOP is that party elites all over the country are irresponsibly ginning up passions on it.pic.twitter.com/NTLaiuFCZU

Sincerest apologies to Midwesterners triggered by the term "Heartland," it's what the researchers used but in the spirit of reconciliation I offer this alternativepic.twitter.com/GQgmVruk4v

Here's the thing: The US probably *should* be broken up. Not a Civil *war*, but let's have a Civil Separation.

Ask for the % that say they would be willing to fight or have their sons or daughters die and it will go way down. Though I do think that giving states and sub-regions the power to secede peacefully would be a win for the U.S. and a way for us to renegotiate our power structures.

I don’t imagine that they’d be willing to secede without taking some nukes with them, so such a settlement would give us a new angry, aggrieved nuclear neighbor
