I would argue such policies are less ableist and more paternalistic. University students are legal adults and should be able understand the consequences of skipping classes. Thay should also have the autonomy to skip when needed.
-
They’re ableist first and foremost because they punish based on health. For students with chronic illnesses their existence becomes a barrier to receiving grades commensurate with their work.

A few days into this semester my mom was texting me saying my terminally ill 6 yr old sister was in the ER right before class started. I still went to class Bc of the attendance policy. I couldn’t focus on the lecture at all. LOOK AT THIS POLICYpic.twitter.com/8TuTHb83Q7

Ty for all the empathy.
I actually missed classes all week cuz my sister is still in the hospital & mom can’t take care of her on her own while she’s sick. She’s doing much better, Docs say we can go home Monday! might go talk to the dean when I get back - Još 2 druga odgovora

I had to drop out of school because my art teacher said he would fail me for missing class BECAUSE I HAD TO HAVE SURGERY AND COULDNT WALK ON CRUTCHES IN THE STUDIO.
-
Same. I had to leave school when I had seizures & my grandma died. Prof said I should have saved an absence for her funeral. Best part: prof is now working on the Living Wage Campaign.

Requiring a doctor's note is also classist. Poor students can't afford to tack on more debt for a doctor to say "yup, they have a cold". And ofc, mental illnesses, as you said.
-
Every college I've attended/worked at has had free health care for its undergraduate students.

1 - Strict attendance policy’s suck and hurt people who are genuinely trying their best. My school tried to get me to join their honors society but the first thing on the must have was “must have perfect attendance. No doctors notes or excuses period” I just got up and walked out
-
2- due to the fact that my doctors are nearly 2 hours away and appointments take all day for me. It’s 2 hour drive there then 2 back and then add 1-2 hours there. Their policy of not accepting doctors notes excludes so many students from their already strict acceptance policy
