Espresso based coffee became more available. In the 90s in many places in Britain if you asked for a latté you’d get an incredilous look. The nearest you could get was a milky instant nescafé. Industry size espresso machines weren’t prevalent outside big cities.

I asked for an americano in the south Wales valleys and they said "we've got frothy coffee or milky coffee- which is it?" They had an espresso machine but used it to heat milk and add instant coffee.

That’s classic. I love how espresso is taking over the world. Last time I was in Bodha, a few years ago now, you could reliably get good coffee.
