I asked for an americano in the south Wales valleys and they said "we've got frothy coffee or milky coffee- which is it?" They had an espresso machine but used it to heat milk and add instant coffee.
Espresso based coffee became more available. In the 90s in many places in Britain if you asked for a latté you’d get an incredilous look. The nearest you could get was a milky instant nescafé. Industry size espresso machines weren’t prevalent outside big cities.

That’s classic. I love how espresso is taking over the world. Last time I was in Bodha, a few years ago now, you could reliably get good coffee.

Assuming your valleys coffee experience was pre-espresso-world that is….

You know it was actually two months ago.. Rhymney..

oh my.
You didn’t mention those frothy milk drinks can be quite good with added espresso? -
I nearly did, but was afraid they might take offence- coming up there with my "Cardiff ways".

Very wise.
