Are any of you personally invested in Zen Buddhism? I was a zenhead from age 17 to 22. For me, it is my childhood religion
Not personally, other than reading a few books. Did you move on to something else, or just drop the practice, or what?

I first dropped the practice, but I still believed the myths, until I became familiar with the academic histories

but, funnily, the real stories are more interesting than the scriptural histories

Interesting, & true: I know more about real history of other Buddhisms (Theravada/Tibetan) than Zen….

The history of Chan-Zen in China is seriously understudied, in English, at least

but know of no detailed investigation into that.

Yes, exactly…sorting out the influence and lineage of ideas is hard work & time consuming, but is interesting to conjecture
