Insofar as self-construction is fancy grasping, and shi-ne is non-grasping, isn’t there a little of this taking place anyway? I only ask this because it seems important again in subsequent practices which do use it to dissolve self-ing

Sorry, what are ‘this’ and ‘it’ referring to? I’m not quite following your gyst, could you say more? fwiw, ‘grasping’ has the flavor of Sutra. For shi-ne, ‘noticing reference points’ is used more commonly, in the Four Naljor meditations at least.

I have a pet theory that playing with optical illusions and related perceptual weirdness as a sort of object of meditation can serve as a useful antidote to being too deconstructive (or narrow/flat). Things like "Can you focus on two trees simultaneously?"

I like the sound of that. Engaging awareness in the senses can be a good antidote to depression and to negative dissociative experience. Do you have other examples?
