Yes, possibly. I have a private/public boundary that’s difficult to overcome. (I write copiously privately, almost nothing publicly.) I’m not sure how much I do want to write publicly but might be interested to explore.

Ah, interesting, I also had a lot of trouble writing publicly. Managed to solve it by writing under a pseudonym that clearly signals 'this might be crappy', and then merging it back into my IRL identity... no idea if this is a good strategy in general but worked for me!

I think on the whole the first approach is better, but I’m more of a random person irl, so the latter may be more my style.

I really like the random splurge approach actually... generally it has enough coherence for my taste anyway, just from writing style/characteristic way of thinking/recurring themes etc

Yeah. Though as a writer a downside of that coherence is that it can damage your self-image as a unique special snowflake when it turns out that what you believed to be your unique collection of weird interests is actually shared by a huge number of readers. (Source: Hi it me)

I'm only being somewhat facetious. It's not a huge blow to the ego, but I do regularly get surprised by this and have to recalibrate my self-image.

This is a often a surprise and a delight to me too. (“So, wait, you *also* like climbing glaciers, pet vultures and are allergic to metaphysics..?”)

In this case, not at all. :-) I'd be up for trialling vulture petting as a new hobby though.
