I can see how you would think that from the pic, but in fact both were alive. They belong to the same species, both some kind of plane - the inside one is in bark shedding phase.

Or at least, I thought so. Beginning to wonder, now I look at the pics again. Bottom branch on the right looks burned. The top branches had lots of leaves.

I read a book about trees and some of it was cool - neighbouring trees keep each other alive and some of it is depressing like, almost all city trees are dead it just takes a long time for humans to notice (20+years)
