Why does false information spread faster than true on social media ? It's simple, because it's fiction. The narrative is usually carefully crafted to be both believable by and supportive of a particular point of view. Real information is often messy, ambiguous, and unsettling.

is it even worth the time to respond to trolls like that? During the 2016 U.S. Election the Hillary Clinton campaign was running a similar kind of "set the record straight" operation. The people who believe the troll rumors don't read the evidence disproving the rumors.

Depends on the circumstances I think. Reputation matters a lot for NGOs and businesses alike. A small company can be ruined even by a handful of opportunist, malicious individuals making stuff up on sm, if not addressed. Reputation management is a costly, thriving industry.
