I am rarely in Britain these days but one of the first things I notice when I go there is how much people say sorry. “Sorry…” is habitual social navigation in British English. It doesn’t mean “I apologise” any more, it more normally means “I acknowledge you.”

In Finnish we have the somewhat sarcastic "kiitos ja anteeksi" = "thank you and sorry" expression.
