  1. Prikvačeni tweet

I had a conversation with for the podcast: “Vajrayana, Engineering and Jiu-jitsu”: I didn’t yet tweet about it as I’ve been busy helping my Mum transition into a residential home. 1/n

  3. This is the most important page in the Eggplant book, imo - the ethnomethodological flip can be helpfully revelatory for those who got narrowly channelled via STEM education into a fixed mindset and find themselves depressed by or stuck and frustrated with others.

  4. I like Chernoff’s appealing and self deprecating humor. He’s still active, age 96!

  5. The whole interview is delightful and funny and well worth reading for an understanding of the early days of statistics, how the field developed out of the second world war and into the 50s and 60s at Stanford and MIT:

  6. Reading Chernoff in interview with Bather in 1996 and I learned that he attributes the Chernoff bound (exponentially decreasing bounds on tail distributions of sums of independent random variables) to Rubin.

🆕 An accurate, effective understanding of practical activity that is neither cognitive nor science: does that sound paradoxical?

  9. I wrote a short post about this video of the monks and the dog: “Reactions to the video mostly think it’s funny, or weird – because you wouldn’t see this in America or other Western countries. But what strikes me most is its coherence…”

Reflecting on Rota's characterization of Alonzo Church as "logic incarnate". It's shocking how much and rapidly one can learn from people in deep communion with their subject. Often without noticing what one is learning, including what is felt, what is omitted, & what is asked

🆕 Introduction page for Part I of my meta-rationality book. This Part explains how rationalism—the theory that formal rationality can be fully adequate—fails when it encounters nebulosity.

This is a good insight from : Approaching Buddhist Tantra appeals to specialness, whereas approaching Sutra appeals to ordinariness:

  17. Because everything that Buddhist Tantra does stems from its base in experience of emptiness, unless you are familiar with a state of mind that is relaxed and clutter-free, Tantra will refuse to be the thing that you want it to be.

  18. Sometimes Buddhist Tantra can seem frustrating, annoying and incomprehensible. It’s not unusual for people to want Tantra to be something it isn’t, like an extension of what they’re already doing, on steroids or something.
