They call a large group of believers a religion. They call a small group of believers a cult. They say two believers are in love. They call one believer a madman.

In a conventional war each side grows ever more pragmatic as their idealism hits reality and is gradually ground down by it. In the culture war each side grows ever more ideological because the battle is virtual and the belligerents remain insulated from real-world consequences.

Most ideologies are little more than rationalizations for shitty personalities.

The big problem of the digital age is not misinformation, but misinterpretation. Allies are misinterpreted charitably, opponents uncharitably. Trolling is misinterpreted as sincerity. Extremes are misinterpreted as norms. Disagreement is misinterpreted as disrespect.

Twitter is an emotional cacophony. We see a romantic comedy trailer, then prostate cancer statistics, then a dog dancing adorably, then a pic of dead kids. Amid such sensory discord, perhaps the erosion of our attention spans and deadening of our hearts is all that keeps us sane.

One of the biggest sources of idiocy in the world is the belief that you need to have an opinion on everything.

Words are being interpreted with more seriousness than they are being said; remarks made to break the silence are now making the news headlines. Idle talk has lost its innocence; everything is now a statement. In our eagerness to find purpose & meaning, we’ve politicized babble.

If porn is supposedly setting up men to have unrealistic expectations of women and sex, then do romance novels (and, to some degree, romcoms) have a similar effect on women whereby they develop unrealistic expectations of men and relationships?
