It sounds like the books you read didn't work for you, or take you where you needed to go. I am for criticism of self help books or honest reports that they didn't actually help people grow the way they wanted. But I roll my eyes at these standard, *lazy* criticisms.

Moving on, the "weird" criticism at least makes sense if you think the "weird" thing doesn't work. But too often it's just used to simply dismiss original, if flawed, ideas. Perfect one-two punch: "the parts that weren't unoriginal were weird. Check out this idiotic idea! Ha ha!"

Or take textbooks. How many thousands of books have been written to teach children arithmetic, or reading, or biology? Again, why are books on how to live and improve your life held to some bizarre "it's already been said" standard?

It's also a bizarre double standard that is only applied to self help books. There will be new e.g., cooking books/blog posts/videos forever, repeating much of the same ideas and techniques. But books on how to LIVE LIFE should stop just because others have already been written??

The "unoriginal" criticism is especially annoying. "Timeless wisdom, repackaged for a particular audience in a way that helps or inspires *you* to apply it to your life" is a good theme for a book. I ignore the sneers that such books are "unoriginal" - it's a compliment.

Critics put self help books in a double bind. If they only repeat widely accepted ideas, they're unoriginal. If they contain new ideas, they're too weird.

You've struck a nerve, so I guess it's time for me to defend self help books.

Alternate plan: - cancel debt for those with unmanageable debts (big debts and/or low incomes) - buy votes from responsible people who paid off their debts by refunding what they paid - irresponsible people with manageable debts get nothing

People that are middle class+ with manageable student debt who say "you gotta buy votes for so it'll pass and we can help the poor" are the people whose votes have been bought. They have no standing to be preachy!

You've already agreed that part of will be to buy votes from SOME middle class+ people to pass redistribution to the poor. Why shouldn't the people who paid their debts demand you pay THEM in exchange for THEIR support?

If your argument for includes "we have to cancel the debts of middle class and rich debtors, otherwise they'll vote against it + it won't pass", it's reasonable for the "but what about MY debts that I paid off??" crowd to demand you buy THEIR votes as well.

The plans send money to SOME poor people... and a bunch of well off people who have middle class+ and manageable debts. I would prefer saving welfare for the poor instead of forgiving the $2k debt of someone making $90k so they can buy Airpod Pros.

In conclusion, holistic education should compete with a la carte vocational training. That we keep this from happening harms people - and the people most harmed are the poor and vulnerable.

And that's assuming college is even good at "educating the whole person". See The Case Against Education by - it alleges that evidence of this is scant, and not for lack of trying by educators desperate to justify their own jobs.
