Not to mention that the traditional societal formula is that the woman should be in charge of "life responsibilities" for the household. If men had equal pressure to perform that role, it would likely be equally cited as a reason for quitting.

Isn't there often an element of responsibility for the woman's partner, if she has one. There might be less concern with work/life balance if the partner was pulling their weight at home?

Everyone should be able to have a decent work-life balance but capitalism requires that we don't, even if household tasks and childcare were shared equally.

It's so infuriating it's hard to articulate. Either "the system" knows it is being exclusionary by not being welcoming for people with families (the burden of which historically has fallen on women although that realm has opened up) or the system doesn't believe it has to...

... change to allow profs to balance family requirements. This will never change unless we have more women and minorities at the top of the power structure. But that means women and minorities need to walk into their career possibly putting family building at risk....
