    Federal investigators are beginning to probe Chinese influence at US research universities. For the sake of protecting open collaboration with our Chinese colleagues, universities really need to get in front of this.

    It’s an understatement to say just how distinctly disappointing it is to see as a signatory to this despicable letter. We at will be discussing this at our executive council meeting in a few weeks.

    many of our biggest (academic) publishing venues have signed a letter opposing open access. Pretty amazing to read this: (is there any defense of this letter? there is not right?)

    1. Focus on process, not outcomes. 2. Work should be guided by intrinsic motivation (which you can control), not external validation (which you can't). 3. Others will try to define "success" and measure you against their bar(s). Resist this trap; success is ultimately personal.

    A reminder for PhD students and young colleagues, just a reminder that you are not defined by your paper (rejections|accepts). Randomness plays a significant part in most paper/proposal review cycles, and even more so for larger conferences (CHI, security confs, ML conferences).

    True story.

    One of the hardest things to do as an academic is compartmentalize separate areas of your professional life. My calendar is like "from 10-11:30 deal with this raging hellstorm of administrativa and then 11:30-1pm think about the universe". The human mind doesn't work that way.
