My teammates made this change to prevent surprises in a shared device scenario. In the past, people would sometimes sign out of the content area and think that meant they were no longer signed into Chrome, which could cause problems on a shared device. 3/
The new UI clearly reminds you whenever you're logged in to a Google account. Plus, you now only need to sign out in one place before you share your computer with someone else. 4/
If you want to turn on Sync, it's an additional step after you're signed in. Sync uploads your browsing history to Google so you can access it across devices. Sign-in by itself does NOT do that. https://support.google.com/chrome/answer/185277?co=GENIE.Platform%3DDesktop&hl=en … 5/
To reiterate, signing in does NOT turn on Chrome Sync. The Chrome Help Center https://support.google.com/chrome/answer/185277?co=GENIE.Platform%3DDesktop&hl=en … and Chrome White Paper https://www.google.com/chrome/privacy/whitepaper.html … have up-to-date details about this change. My colleagues are updating the Chrome privacy notice ASAP to make this more clear 6/6
FYI the chrome privacy notice has now been updatedhttps://www.google.com/chrome/privacy
I'm starting to realize I want more obvious indications of logged-in state like this. I tend to not be persistently logged-in to much on desktop Chrome, but I'm weird. I.e., if third-party trackers that one is logged-in to as a first-party were displayed in browser chrome...
Background color change that's customizable? For me, that would help me know which account is which. White = special reserved for not logged in. Pink = personal Green = business Blue = throwaway for registrations I care about Red = throwaway for registrations I don't care about
I don’t get, though — if you’re signed in to the browser but sync is off, then what does it mean to be signed in to the browser? What does it do besides sync?
Not much, you can think of it like a Gmail login state indicator.
