For cash or anything cash-like, they have to file form 8300 with the IRS, which requires your SSN.https://www.irs.gov/businesses/small-businesses-self-employed/form-8300-and-reporting-cash-payments-of-over-10000 …

(and yes, they can omit it, but that's supposed to only happen for transactions they didn't realize were over $10k at the time as a mea culpa, and to ask for you to be investigated after the fact. For routine reporting, a business must get this info.)

To avoid it, use another tracked mechanism like a wire transfer. The IRS considers that to be sufficiently inspectable w/o additional reporting

The auto dealership doesn't need to file an 8300 for a cashier's check; the issuing bank will do so if required.

So as to the finance application then, going with

Ugh. They probably thought they had you over a barrel because of the long drive. Trying to buy a used car from a dealership was a miserable experience for me. I had to walk from multiple dealerships. Ended up finding a car on Craigslist, which was a much better experience.

I’ve bought several used cars through the years, and the happiest of those stories were private deals or craigslist, or from dealers who only do used.
