First, define "CA": root cert, CA:TRUE cert, root program participant, or distinct organization capable of issuing certificates. The first two are meaningless numbers, so be wary of sources that use them, like EFF. (1/n)

Root program participants is a better number. For Mozilla, see # of rows in this table: https://ccadb-public.secure.force.com/mozilla/CAInformationReport … However, it undercounts because it doesn't include organizations with sub-CAs (2/n)

# of distinct orgs capable of issuing certs is the most meaningful number, but nobody tracks it. Best bet is to look at distinct CP/CPS URLs in https://ccadb-public.secure.force.com/mozilla/PublicAllIntermediateCerts … and https://ccadb-public.secure.force.com/mozilla/IncludedCACertificateReport … and try to map each URL to an organization. I estimate ~100 for Mozilla. (3/3)
