I don't think I fundamentally see art, even professional design work, as something with "levels" to it. Do "levels" have meaning for you? What is the "next art level" you're trying to get to? How will you know when you've gotten there?

I dunno if there are concrete levels, but it's always interesting to try to peg your work somewhere on a spectrum. However, I don't think I'll ever get over the feeling of going through work from an artist I admire, where i used to think "how did they do that, incredible" then--

--then looking at that same work months later and suddenly being able to say “oh, that’s this brush, and this construction, and here’s how I would approach this, etc”. That’s when I know my ‘eye’ has improved and now I have to make my hand catch up

Totally feel this! I just wonder at how wildly varied the artists we each look up to are. My moments of "how did they do that- that's incredible!" are really SUPER defined by my taste and my own goals, and a lot of "masterful art" does nothing for me in that way

Yeah I can see that, I definitely think there's a difference in "I appreciate this incredible art for what it does" and "This incredible art resounds deeply with me, I need to learn from it NOW" & the content of those categories are going to differ for each artist
