Also, replace the ball with a battlefield. The mysterious mech pilot who saved the prince, left behind her glass key. She gets knighted at the end and becomes commander of the kingdom's mech guard. You could throw that whole thing in space or Escaflowne it.

100% in, as long as we get a scene where the prince is sitting on her lap while she's piloting the mech in the heat of battle with "the stepsister collective"

My hubs says the Fairy Godmother is the scientist that designed the mech in secret and has bequeathed it to the Belle because she’s a worthy hero. Can we just ... make this real quick???
