(1/2) I think paintovers are tacky. You’re presuming there weren’t artists on staff pitching these ideas during pre-pro— there were, they just got shot down by directors & execs (just as you would). It reads as, “If -I- were on the project this is what it would look like.” No.

Like MAN I don’t think people know what it’s like working for huge companies—your work gets churned through a machine of execs and appeal and target audiences, or just the needs of the project shift in some understandable way, and stuff gets... Filed down. You get used to it.

Whenever I look at my concepts for a thing vs the final product... HOO boy. It’s so rare that you get a win where you see your original, uncut design faithfully translated into the final product! It’s always... w e l lpic.twitter.com/vIyLVwHf76

That’s when you make your own stuff, or you work on smaller teams with more creative control. The assumption that the teams behind huge films and games were just “dumb” and “didn’t think of it” is often such an oversimplification of an extremely complicated situation

The "didn't think of it" part kills me, especially for smaller teams. So many ideas, so little time! Often the "obvious" just ends up getting punted down the schedule

There are so, so many reasons why a production goes in one direction rather than another. I don't expect young/inexperienced artists to intuitively know this- but I think it's good to hear. It really gets me when pro's do it, though. Like, c'mon friend. You know how this goes.

Woof, yeah. Once you've seen behind the curtain, you should have a bit of empathy
