Horror Tip: A horrible monster isn't scary unless it represents a horrifying idea. The monster only works as an ambassador of a bigger conceptual terror - tip of the iceberg. Make sure there's more beneath the surface.

Zombie-ism is also basically a mythologised version of rabies, which is transmitted through the fluids (usually saliva) of an infected creature that has lost control of itself. Once symptoms manifest, it is incurable and only one person in known history has survived it.

Even if most people, unless they work with wildlife or in healthcare, don't *intellectually* know much about rabies, I guarantee you your "lizard brain" still knows it perfectly well.

Fun fact I very recently learned: Rabies infection has a "prodromal" stage which causes uncharacteristically docile behaviour (including nocturnal animals wandering around during the day) before it progresses into the stereotypical aggressive salivating stage.

So that's something to consider with regards to any unease we might feel about any animal (or human!) who's not being aggressive, per se, they're just not... acting the way they should be.
