Alright- back to it! In lieu of streaming the rest, I’ll update this thread with progress shots- I filled in the rest of Agatha’s flat colors for her whole design (on the left) and included the rendering up to the point it was finished in the stream (right)pic.twitter.com/htLjGOWyI2

This alone can take a couple hours- I try to be as specific in creating the zones of color + edges of the design as I would if I were neatly inking line art. I never name my layers, but just to demonstrate the setup, I did this time ;) I use the character’s silo as a mask:pic.twitter.com/uRDsfUDsCv

The main shadows are in! I love this part of the process- getting to sculpt shapes and play with soft and hard edges. Set to multiply in context of the base colors (left) and the layer on its own (right)!pic.twitter.com/GXAR0lAJxS

How do you pick colors for your shadows? I feel like detail never gets lost in your work

Hmm- I think I pick shadow colors in response to how they interact with the base colors- I never pick in a vacuum. I start with one shadow color, and hue/sat shift it until it plays nicely with the whole piece, then go in after all the shadows are “drawn” with secondary colors

ahhh, I think I see what you mean. You lay down the base shadow shape in one color, mask it, and then go in with secondary colors?

HMMM I'mma try this next time! I use shadows in multiply but I'm timid about using colors/more than one

It’s definitely a stylized way of thinking about it- but it can be fun to see how different colors play variously against parts of the base palette, and over time I’ve figured out a few intuited recipes for combos I like!

I can definitely see how that works & is non-destructive! Will be trying it out :)
