Y’all ever stop and think about Joseph Campbell and Hero With A Thousand Faces and, like, how maybe he made a lot of thick smoke and had some dope, bendy mirrors?

He was the originator of the term “Follow Your Bliss”, which is exactly the kind of thing white folk like me love to hear and I think more or less exactly why we still eat trash and burn fossil fuels? But like, thanks for all the bathroom decor Joe.pic.twitter.com/cFBIcM6QOK

Honest Q: can anybody direct my attention to any erudite critiques of Joseph Cambell’s (Hero With A Thousand Faces, the hero’s journey etc) work? He was taught widely in school, but I have a growing sense that I dissent and I wonder who else out there has been down this road

Ohhhh boy, you speakin' my language. I got some links for you--first off if you're reading Cambell (& his monomyth theory), you should check out/know about Vogler. He's a Holywood script-writer who did a lot to fit Cambell's work into the movie-style hero's journey. However!!

The monomyth is not 100% linear and doesn't always play nice with 3-act structure, which Vogler tried to fit it all into. (If you find Cambell's work too academic, Vogler's work may be more approachable)...

THAT ALL BEING SAID here are some links i think might help you out and highlight how the monomyth does not play nice with typical holywood storytelling and Not Everything Is A Damn Hero's Journey https://www.huffingtonpost.com/craig-chalquist-phd/why-i-seldom-teach-the-he_b_6739046.html … https://narrativefirst.com/articles/not-everything-is-a-heros-journey …

Also I highly recommend that everyone read Save the Cat before diving into any plot structure nonsense. Blake Snyder's plot classifications are not about genre, not about the Hero's Journey, and WAY more flexible https://www.amazon.com/Save-Cat-Blake-Snyder-ebook/dp/B00340ESIS/ref=sr_1_1?s=digital-text&ie=UTF8&qid=1538303743&sr=1-1&keywords=save+the+cat …

Yesssss. I’m here for it. I definitely need to read Save The Cat! I think the application aspect is compelling, but I’m also interested in different (critical) takes on the way he drew his initial suppositions about story and structure to begin with. I suspect mumbo jumbo.pic.twitter.com/aTldOecNd9
