I was always told fan art was good because it shows you can care and do good work for something you didn’t create. I hope that message gets across to any curmudgeonly old art teachers.

SERIOUSLY I tell this to so many students—most of the work you do professionally in this industry is going to be playing in someone else's sandbox, so proving you can do interesting and transformative work within those parameters is a crazy valuable skill
