One thing that I dont think gets talked about enough in the art school vs. self-taught professional artist debate: I can't count the number of jobs/opportunities I've gotten thanks to the friends & network that I made at art school.

It shouldn't be the deciding factor, but I sure as hell didn't graduate starting with no network. And now, a bunch of my old classmates are industry pros and it's fucking rad to see them succeed and meet up with them at conferences

Also something that isn't touched on much--professors as a network who can connect new alumni with old Also also--professors who still work in the industry and can connect students directly with jobs/opportunities Who knows your work/work ethic better than a professor?

Basically to say: art school is stupid-expensive, but perks & network from a reputable school can be massive & take time to emerge Also also also: don't be a dick in college because your peers and professors Will Remember That

The network I established is pretty much the only good thing I bring up about my time at art school. Everything else I feel I could have done on my own.

I’ll be real: the majority of kids I onew went in with no skill and came out without any. Anatomy, colour theory, they went through and graduated without any of it. To me, you’re paying money for connections and a paper. It’s a bit disappointing.

I hope Twitter and co do it today. I couldn't and never will be able to afford art school, even in Germany.

I wish someone taught networking 101 in school (agnostic of industry here). These are things I had to figure out for myself like 10 years after the fact.

I had a professor once tell me that if you're an introvert, learn some extroversion for social events and that's some of the best networking advice I ever got. Some kind of entertainment industry networking 101 class/panel would be awesome though

In my opinion, networking is probably the biggest reason to go to art school!

Graduated 8 years ago from art school and I still keep in contact with a bunch of people I went to school with. Two jobs were from folks I went to school with. Networking is so important, even outside of school.
