O man, I could write a thesis-length explanation, but sadly I don't think there's a lot of articles or chat out there about this? I couldn't find anything, it's something that isn't talked about often because it gets tricky and people's definition of 'illustration' is so loose--

--essentially concept art is the stuff that feeds the game/product pipeline by giving 3D modelers & animators design sheets to build assets from. Illustrations are 'prettier', time-intensive, & usually made to sell a game/product--

Like, I agree in terms of the production process that concept art is the early work to build assets off of, but not all Illustration work is just the 'pretty' and time-intensive stuff. I think they definitely cross paths often.

Oh yeah, thats why its such a complex/nuanced issue. There are different kinds of concept art, and they all serve to get "buy in" for the final product. The biggest issue is that an entire genre of concept art exists that is not largely considered illustration and vice versa
