We launched JPG in 2021, with the goal to contribute to the NFT ecosystem by building infrastructure that maps relationships and substance through context.
The Canons are a major step towards that mission.

As we’ve seen the Cambrian explosion of NFTs over the past two years, a very present need for curation and organization has emerged. A need to build a verifiable consensus, which both records and adapts as the NFT ecosystem grows and matures.

Currently there exists a void of context between individual projects and the broad categories on marketplaces.
There's no comprehensive list of CC0 projects, mapping of Nounz derivatives, or glitch artwork repository, yet this is the substance of NFTs that we care about.

Canons are designed to fill this gap.
They are crowdsourced lists of NFTs governed and created by the community, whose actors are bound by a reputation system.
The Canons are stored on-chain via Arweave, allowing them to become indexed “culture legos” for use as public goods.

A contextual data layer like the one JPG Canons facilitates is a key primitive towards improved and decentralized discoverability, verification, curation, stratification, archiving, and context for NFTs.

The Canonicon NFT (designed by ) is your gateway to Canon governance and acts as a visual marker of your participation. It is dynamic, customizable, and nontransferable, reflecting your governance and exhibition history within JPG

We've built a wallet-signature based voting system tied to the Canonicon NFT in your account to govern the Canons costlessly and transparently.
All vote, proposal, and Canon data is stored on Arweave forever.

Governance is on a weekly cadence to make tracking and participating simple.
Submissions within the first week will be Pending, until next Tuesday when they become Active for voting. After an additional week, new Pending submissions become Active and approved Active are canonized

JPG will be rolling out access to the Canonicon free mint allowlist gradually over time. Our goal in structuring the allowlist will be to maximize curators who believe NFTs are important cultural and experiential objects that need to be better indexed.

To begin the alpha phase, the Canonicon will be mintable by existing JPG curators, SALT holders, and additional curators within our community. This initial group will help create the first Canon: Dynamic NFTs

After this initial Alpha, we will continue adding more users to the allowlist, and enter a Beta stage in which the JPG team will create Canons we believe to be particularly useful.
Following the Beta period, in Q1 any Canonicon holder will be able to propose new Canons.

We believe the Canons will serve as a public resource for discovery and indexing of the NFT space, leading them to be highly useful for experts looking to deeply research and newcomers seeking an orientation or interest alike.
