It feels to me there is some fundamental problem with treating subcultures as a form of "exit," but I haven't quite pinpointed what it ishttps://twitter.com/sonyaellenmann/status/1016045382688595968 …

It struck me upon immigrating to the US just how many various subcultures there exist here. The existence of those subcultures, however, did not make creation of close friendships easier for me -- it made it harder. I suspect many people have had similar experiences.

Suppose 10% of the population are punks, 10% are goths, 10% are jocks, 10% are rainbow fairies, and so on. So *even if you belong to one of those groups*, the remaining 90% of the population will look like complete weirdos to you.

(And if you don't belong to *any* of those groups, then you're just completely isolated!)

So I happen to disagree that this diversity of *subcultures* is a good thing -- and I haven't even said anything about the diversity of *actual* (ethnic) cultures. I don't understand why atomization of society "by a thousand cuts" is supposed to be good!

And if you don't accept that atomization of society "by a thousand cuts" is good -- then there is *nothing,* absolutely nothing about the direction in which the western societies have been heading in the last 50 years or so that seems good to begin with.

In Europe, it is widely accepted that lack of integration among Muslim immigrants leads to terrorism. Yet place yourself into the position of a Muslim immigrant. Why would you want to assimilate into a culture that's divided "by a thousand cuts" into little cults full of weirdos?
