The same thing that's wrong with cutting off your entire foot to solve a problem that could be solved by just cutting into it and tweaking things a bit. Surgery should always be approached with the idea of doing as little cutting and amputating as possible to solve the problem.

It would if there was another option to treat chronic infection. Same with tonsillitis, if it’s chronic the general practice is to remove it.
