My somewhat cynical take on bullies in academia is that they’re a feature, not a bug. I touched on this with an earlier tweet, but the qualities we commonly associate with “top scientist” in academia are extremely present in the kinds of people who bully others.
mint condition Magnum Opus 'Apollo Remastered' in Scheltema bookstore in Amsterdam. What a book! It's a beautiful tome & Andy's work is exquisite. An essential purchase - I'll be dining on this for YEARS.
what shatner describes on having gone to the edge of space is exactly the emotion the space billionaires don’t want associated with their ego projects. it forces us to see that space colonization fantasies distract from what should be our priority: saving our beautiful planet.
"It was among the strongest feelings of grief I have ever encountered. The contrast between the vicious coldness of space and the warm nurturing of Earth below filled me with overwhelming sadness ... My trip to space was supposed to be a celebration ... it felt like a funeral."
In an exclusive excerpt from William Shatner’s new book, “Boldly Go: Reflections on a Life of Awe and Wonder,” the “Star Trek” actor reflects on his voyage into space on Jeff Bezos’ Blue Origin space shuttle https://bit.ly/3MbTdzS
#Jupiter has reached opposition for 2022 shining brightly in our skies. This perhelic opposition sees the planet reach its largest apparent diameter for several decades - and ideal time to get outside and enjoy the views. Even small telescopes will show features on its disk.
Welp.
I have a pretty big announcement in my newsletter today, and I'm asking y'all for help. Being serious in this way isn't usually my style, but this is where I find myself.
acquired this image of Jupiter's moon Ganymede from 1825km (1,134mi) altitude. In 5 days it will passing over Europa at only 356km (223mi). [Image on left is at detail of right if you click and zoom in to explore]
"The spacecraft is expected to provide some of the highest-resolution Europa images ever taken..."
Here's your periodic reminder that this mission almost flew all the way to Jupiter *without a camera slated to be onboard.*
Hello, old friend! Our #JunoMission will soon buzz low over Jupiter's intriguing ocean moon, Europa – the first such flyby in decades. The spacecraft is expected to provide some of the highest-resolution Europa images ever taken, and other key science data https://missionjuno.swri.edu/news/nasas-juno-will-perform-close-flyby-of-europa…
A test render where high frequency information from a shape-from-shading (SFS) DEM was merged with the Gaskell shape model of Mimas. For comparison: The Cassini SFS source image and a render of the Gaskell Mimas shape model. Looks promising - this is very preliminary though.
I am admittedly, while disappointed, 100% unsurprised about today's launch scrub for Artemis/SLS. This vehicle configuration has never flown and the components will not be reused once it does. All systems and constraints must be perfect for go status. As they should.
Four hours of #Jupiter's rotation and the Great Red Spot!
I processed over 150 GB of video (10k frames every 5 min) to create this. Hope you enjoy, and happy Friday! #Astrophotographyhttps://astrobin.com/5zipj5
Countdown to the launch of #ApolloRemastered
T-5 days. Ignition sequence start!
To help convey the grandeur and scale of the spectacular lunar landscape, stitched panoramic shots are displayed across both pages, or via huge 3-page pull-outs:
PROTON FLARE: the big M flares earlier apparently generated a proton event here at Earth. The flares can accelerate charged particles to near relativistic speeds which bombard Earth. Astronauts are in particular danger from such events especially on their way to the Moon or Mars.
