Good question! I hadn’t realized there were such strong trade networks in Africa. E.g. the Mali empire’s gold trade, which spanned a good chunk of West Africa + linked it to North Africa.

A couple of books! The German Hansa, David Conrad’s Empires of Medieval West Africa, King Leopold’s Ghost (not about trade but deeply haunting and worth reading)

Truth! I've been sick too and it feels like a weird sort of productivity even if you are running a high fever. I'm experiencing different states of consciousness and consuming different types of content. Haha omg okay it's not all fun I agree
, chills and headaches = bad -
It is SO weird to be knocked off your feet when you’re used to running a million miles an hour at all times. Feeling very humbled. Also congested — definitely that. Hope you’re feeling better soon :/

Reading the German Hansa again! Also later but https://www.amazon.com/First-Modern-Economy-Perseverance-1500-1815/dp/0521578256 … is probably the most comprehensive source on Dutch economic history
