abso, it’s much easier (and rewarding, if your goal is to actually get to know the other person) to be *interested* rather than to optimize for being interesting.

Yes! Have to constantly resist the urge to turn every conversation into a performance.

Agree. As a person who doesn't mind silence, I find people that feel the need to fill the void with thoughtless banter become insufferable much quicker.

I’ve noticed this in myself. It’s difficult to correct for but worth it. Also, frankly, going deep in conversation with people you don’t know all that well *is* a recipe for making new friends at first, but it can end with you feeling a false sense of intimacy.

agree but "can't be bored" seems laudable. Small talk is interesting, fun, and hard to do well

i struggle to make small talk + find small talk interesting but if i turn it into a little game and try to ask good questions that the person will enjoy answering + open up w/ it can become engaging for both of us

Being unable to sit in silence is the mark of being unable to be bored for any amount of time, yet small talk is the often the result of silence making those people uncomfortable. I don't mind small talk, but like every generalization, there are exceptions.

I'm a SAHM with two kids. Most of my adult conversations are small talk. Not all small talk is created equal.
